Most diaper cake tutorials tell you to roll about 50 diapers. The next guide says up to 100. There is no standard three-tier cake, so there is no standard count — but the brand guides overlap, and Pampers splits its numbers tier by tier. That is enough to buy the right number of packs before you roll a single diaper.
Diapers per tier: what four guides say
Pampers is the only guide that gives a number for each tier. Huggies, BabyBjörn and Babylist give totals for a three-tier cake. Where they disagree, the range stays in the table with the source named.

How to read it: the two- and three-tier Pampers totals are its per-tier ranges added together. Every three-tier figure includes 50, and three of the four stretch to 65. For a round three-tier cake, plan on 50–65 diapers. Go toward Babylist's 100 only if you want a wider, fuller cake.
Why one tier can be 20 diapers or 60
Rolled diapers stand in rings. Pack round rolls snugly around one center roll and each new ring holds six more than the ring inside it: 6, then 12, then 18. So a tier holds 7, 19 or 37 rolls, and adding one ring to your base nearly doubles it.
That is our own geometry for perfectly round rolls, not a brand figure: real rolls squash, and a center tube changes the count. But it is how two honest guides can call very different numbers a "base tier". Roll a practice ring before you buy for the whole cake.
What it costs: the formula, not a guess
Diaper prices move and vary by brand and size, so here is the math rather than a dollar figure. Pack count is printed on every box.

Against buying the same diapers boxed, the diapers cost exactly the same. A diaper cake is a gift of diapers in costume. What you add is supplies. Babylist's list is a pack of at least 100 small hair rubber bands, 4 to 6 yards of twine or thin ribbon, a paper towel tube and a cake board of about 14 inches, plus wide ribbon to decorate. Hand any spares over in their pack rather than hiding them in the cake.
Which diaper size to roll
This is where the guides disagree most:
- Babylist recommends newborn or size 1.
- Pampers says size 1–3 or a mix is common. It puts larger sizes (2 or 3) on the bottom tiers because they are sturdier and easier to stack, with smaller sizes on top. Babies grow quickly, it notes, so size 2 or 3 makes the gift last longer.
- BabyBjörn suggests a bigger size: easier to work with, and you need fewer.
Two of three lean bigger, and the reason is practical. Unless the parents have asked for newborn, build the base in size 2 and the top in size 1. How to make a diaper cake, step by step
1. Make the base
Fix a paper towel tube upright in the center of a round cardboard board. BabyBjörn tapes it and says a large baby lotion bottle works too; Babylist glues it. Glue and tape go on the tube and board only, never on a diaper. If the cake will travel, BabyBjörn stresses a sturdy base.
2. Roll every diaper the same way
Wash your hands and keep diapers off the floor (Pampers). Babylist rolls each one from the bottom, the end opposite the opening, and snaps a small hair rubber band around it. Keep the tension even. One fat roll pushes a whole ring out of shape.
3. Build the bottom tier outward
Stand rolls around the center and tie that ring with twine. Keep adding rings until the tier looks full, securing each one as you go. Then tie a long length of twine or ribbon around the whole tier (Babylist, Huggies).
4. Stack the next tiers
Repeat on top of the base, a ring or two smaller each time. Pampers lists dowels for stabilizing multiple tiers; in Babylist's and BabyBjörn's builds the center tube does that job. Never push anything sharp through the diapers themselves.
5. Hide the ties, then decorate
Wrap ribbon, lace or tulle over the twine (BabyBjörn). Tuck in useful extras such as bibs, burp cloths, socks or a teether. Huggies adds a warning: keep decorations large enough not to be a choking hazard for any small children at the party. Pull the ribbon colors from your shower theme.

Make ahead, move it, hand it over
- Timing: Pampers says a diaper cake can be made days or even a few weeks early if it is stored somewhere clean and dry and wrapped against dust and moisture.
- Carrying: lift by the board, never the top tier or the ribbon. For a long drive, carry the tiers separately and stack them at the venue.
- Diaper raffle? A cake is diapers too, so say on the ticket whether it earns an entry before a guest who spent an evening rolling asks.
