Every baby shower invitation gives you a time and an address. Almost none tell you what to wear, which is why the question lands in a group chat at 11pm two days before.
The short version. The mom-to-be usually does not need a maternity dress — three non-maternity cuts fit a bump better, and they get worn again. Guests have a different problem: dress for the venue, not the theme. And the two rules everyone repeats — never white, never black — are folklore rather than etiquette.
The 30-second answer is set by the venue
Read the invitation for the address before the colour scheme. A restaurant shower and a backyard shower are two dress codes under one name.

Three non-maternity cuts fit a bump better than most maternity dresses
Maternity sizing assumes a standard bump at a standard week. Bumps are not standard, and a dress cut for week 36 hangs like a tent at week 28. These three cuts solve the shape with geometry rather than sizing, so they keep working as the weeks move.
What works
- Empire waist — the seam sits under the bust and everything below falls free.
- Wrap and faux-wrap — a tie waist you set yourself, and the only cut here that solves nursing access later.
- A-line — fitted at the shoulders, widening from there. The office-appropriate one.
- Stretch knit over stiff woven, in every case.
What usually disappoints
- Bodycon in a woven fabric — great in photos, unwearable after cake.
- Anything strapless — it migrates downward all afternoon.
- Buying two sizes up — wider everywhere, not longer at the front, so the hem rides up.
- Single-wear maternity buys — the cost per wear is brutal.

The white rule is borrowed from weddings, where it protects the bride's one-day-only outfit. Nobody at a shower is wearing a white dress yours could compete with. The black rule comes from funerals and is thinner still — a black dress is the most useful thing in most closets.
Colour matters in one situation: when the host has stated one. An all-white garden party, a gender-reveal palette, a request to wear the theme colours — that request is the rule. Otherwise wear what you like. Our own view: skip white for a practical reason rather than an etiquette one, namely cake, punch and two hours on patio furniture.

Season and role decide the layers, not the outfit
With the venue settled, season is the last variable — and it lands differently depending on your job that day.

Grass eats thin heels and patios are uneven. A dress that works everywhere still fails if you spend two hours on a lawn in stilettos.
Dress-code cue: dress for the floor, then the weather, then the photos. Anything the floor rules out never gets to the photo stage anyway.
The 20-minute version, in order
- Find the address and decide indoors or outdoors. That settles shoes and hem length.
- Check for a stated theme or colour request. It outranks every rule here.
- Pick the cut before the colour — empire, wrap or A-line if there is a bump.
- Choose shoes for the surface, not the outfit. Flats or a low block heel on grass.
- Add one layer you can remove. Indoor showers run hot, outdoor ones cool off fast.
- Sit in it for five minutes at home. Anything you adjust on your own sofa you will adjust forty times.
